Niwin and Kevzta bring afro house and South African amapiano to Norway with their new single “Falling”.

Amapiano is a new form of house music growing out of the townships of Pretoria and Johannesburg. The genre has gradually expanded its reach, first as a major genre in South Africa, then Nigeria, most parts of Africa and eventually, London. Will the rest of the world follow the lead? Niwin and Kevzta’s “Falling” is definitely in this tradition: Niwin says that the bass sound is inspired by DJ Maphorisa—maybe the greatest producer from South Africa.

The Oslo-based duo Niwin and Kevzta became friends through hip hop and house dancing. Their relationship strengthened for real after a three month stay as dancers in The Philippines. Kevzta says the trip was life-changing. Now the two of them joins forces to spread good vibes through music.

Their background as dancers makes sense, when we hear the up-tempo and dance ready music they make. Now Niwin (Nikolai Nypan) functions as producer, while Kevzta (Kevin Mbugua) is the vocalist and songwriter.

The syncopated beat on “Falling” is up-tempo and soulful, with afro house rhythms inspired by American deep house, UK broken beat, and even more audible, South African amapiano. Kevzta is crooning in his mother tongue Swahili, and he’s inspired by artists such as Kenyans Sauti Sol and Nviiri The Storyteller. The song is all about falling in love.

Kevzta has released several singles before and has performed at festivals such as Bylarm and Oslo Mela Festival. Niwin is part of the club night Mud Sessions, DJ-ing in spaces like Jaeger and Revolver in Oslo, for numerous years.
